KEY DISCUSSION The “big highlight” on the agenda for the June program at the local Norwayne School Board was the recognition of the boys’ athletics team that won the state competition and the high school JustWrite team. Norwayne who took second place at the state level, Superintendent Kevin Leatherman said.

The state-ranking individuals on the high school JustWrite team are ninth-place Katy Magyar; Abigail Arnold, 10th place; and Abigail Hassenzahl, 13th place.

Achievements in athletics and writing competitions were “two really cool things,” Leatherman said.

June’s agenda may have been relatively light on other business, Leatherman said, but it’s a busy time of year for district staff as they wrap up a school year and prepare for the next one.

OTHER DEBATE One of the biggest summer projects in the Norwayne district is the resurfacing of the elementary school parking lot and playground, Leatherman said.

The project begins Friday, July 1 and should take at least a week to complete. In mid-July it will be ready for use again.

Norwayne School buildings will be closed in July

1. School buildings in Norwayne will be closed in July, but the district office will be open with variable hours. Leatherman advised calling before stopping.

2. The board has approved a school bus emergency plan. School buildings have a crisis contingency plan with instructions outlined on a flipchart, Leatherman said, but “there was nothing like that for our transportation department.”

For example, Leatherman said, bus drivers should have information about the protocol to follow when encountering a tornado.

Each bus will now have a flipchart — “a resource to guide (drivers)” — to follow in an emergency.
