In the season 6 finale of Chicago Med, Ethan (Brian Tee) found himself fighting for his life after being shot by one of Dean’s former patients (Steven Weber). While Ethan ultimately pulled it off, it was made clear in the closing moments of the Finals that Ethan has a long recovery ahead of him in Season 7.
Prior to the season, Ethan’s recovery was expected to take place in the first few episodes of the season and while this is indeed the case, his recovery happened offscreen with updates provided to viewers during the first episodes of the season.
After missing the first six episodes of the season, Brian Tee finally returned with Ethan making his season 7 debut in the seventh episode of the season. As Ethan was still recovering from his injury, he seemed to finally be getting closer to a return to the ER until his recovery took an unexpected turn for the worse in the eighth episode of the season.
Brian Tee will he miss more episodes of Chicago Med?
At this time, NBC has yet to confirm whether Brian Tee will miss any additional episodes of Chicago Med season 7 after its recent two-episode comeback; however, there appears to be a reason for concern.
In the eighth episode of the season, Ethan went a little too far on his return to the ER and greatly delayed his recovery. As we found out in the closing moments of the episode, Ethan had decided to be recommended for the Multi-Tiered Spinal Fusion procedure, which was the best step in his recovery.

Unfortunately, the procedure requires two months of post-operative rehabilitation, which prompted Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) to tell Ethan to take as much time as he needed to take care of himself. The exchange seemed to suggest that Ethan might step away for another handful of episodes – after all, he missed the first six episodes of the season while in rehab.
Is Brian Tee leaving Chicago Med?
While it looks like Brian Tee might miss a few more episodes from Season 7, Tee is not leaving the show. In fact, he’s just recently extended his contract with the show and remains a regular on the show despite missing many episodes this season.
In the offseason, Tee was cast in new Amazon Prime drama Expatriates and NBC heeded his commitment to the project by giving him time away from Chicago Med to film Expatriates. Rather than seeing his character’s recovery take place onscreen, the writers used the storyline as a way to fit Tee’s schedule by having Ethan picked up offscreen instead.
